On Tuesday morning August 2, 2022, Audrey M. Shafer Angel passed away at her home in Gallipolis, Ohio. She was surrounded by her loving family. Audrey lived to the age of 97 and stayed active until the last few months of her life.
Audrey arrived into this world on Saturday, December 13, 1924 in Marion, Ohio to her parents, Willie Fleming Shafer and Minnie Melvina Johnson Shafer. She was the second of five children and the last living member of her family. Audrey lived most of her life in Gallia County, Ohio.
Audrey married the love of her life, James S. Angel, on December 11, 1942. They were married for 58 years. To this union were born four daughters. The first two were a set of twins, Judy and Joy. Six years later, they had a daughter whom they named JoAnn; and nineteen years later came their last daughter whom they named Jill. None of their girls had middle names. Audrey always said it was hard to come up with two names when she had the twins let alone middle names.
Throughout Audrey’s life, she endured loss after loss. The first was their daughter JoAnn who died on May 29, 2000. The next was her husband on March 14, 2001. Her daughter Jill passed away on February 21, 2011; and her granddaughter, Sonya Swain Cowles died on November 29, 2018.
Audrey was a member of Kings Chapel Church. She never worked a public job but could be found raising their daughters in her early years, in the tobacco patch, in the tomato patch, driving a truck in the hayfield, or cooking a big dinner for everyone. Her hobbies included quilting, gardening, a well-manicured lawn, word search puzzles, and Wheel of Fortune. Audrey was a great mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend and a good neighbor to everyone. She was often spotted driving her riding mower around to her neighbors to check on them.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Betty Shafer Caldwell; three brothers, Clarence, Darrell, and Jerry Shaffer; two sons-in-law, Bobby L. Clary and Amel L. Waugh; and the aforementioned daughters and granddaughter.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are daughters, Judy Waugh and Joy Clary of Crown City, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Allen Waugh, Rick Clary, Bruce Waugh, Jane Ann Cox, Deanna Waugh, Rodney Clary, Tyler Preece, and Tristan Preece; seventeen great grandchildren; thirty-five great great grandchildren; two sons-in-law, Monty Swain and Jerry Preece; sisters-in-law, Grace Shaffer, Irene Shaffer, Josephine Gibson, Barbara Chambers, Pauline Jeffers, Lin Angel, Juanita Angell, and Vicky Jeffers Angel; brothers-in-law, Irwin Gibson, Don Perkins, Junior Angel, and Roger Angel; and several nieces and nephews.

Her burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service Saturday from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
