Carl D. Thompson

Carl Douglas Thompson, 75, of Gallipolis, Ohio passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at his residence.

Born October 7, 1948 in Logan, West Virginia, Carl was the son of the late Jay and Erma Thompson. He was the eighth child born of nine children; Carl’s surviving sisters are  Brenda (Edward) Morrison and Joann (Jerry) Kucher. On May 22, 1968, Carl was drafted into the United States Army into the Special Weapons 22nd Missile Detachment where he became his team chief and went into special weapons school where he excelled. After achieving top of the class in special weapons school, he was deployed to Vietnam with the 101st Airborne alongside MACV Studies and Observation Group (SOG) and proudly served his country from May 23, 1969 to May 14, 1970. He proudly supported the 101st Airborne and special forces. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

He eventually went on to retire after 28 years from the Southern Ohio Coal Company as a hydraulic specialist.

Carl married Joyce (Morrison) Thompson on June 26, 1971 in Logan, West Virginia; she preceded him in death on December 14, 2013. Surviving are his son, Brent (Shawn) Thompson; grandson, Hunter (Kristen) Thompson; and granddaughter, Ellie Thompson all of Gallipolis.

On June 1, 2023, Carl married Lisa Marcum who survives him, as well as two step daughters, Tiffany McComas of Gallipolis and Kayla (Justin) Mollohan of Bidwell and step grandchildren, Jessa Mollohan, Levi Mollohan, and Emma Mollohan.

The funeral service for Carl will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024 at White Oak Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Ward officiating.  His burial will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery, where military services will be provided by the Gallia County Funeral Detail.  Friends and family may call prior to the service Monday from 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at the church.
