Carter Tate Ross, Jr.

Carter Tate Ross, Jr., 93, of Niceville, Florida, passed away peacefully and went to the Lord on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Twin Cities Hospital in Niceville, Florida.

Born on August 27, 1931 in La Jara, Colorado, Carter was the son of the late Carter Tate Ross, Sr. and Ada Marie Rush Ross.  He was raised on a ranch in Colorado.  On January 16, 1954, Carter married Nell Dean Chapman Ross in Council Bluffs, Iowa; Nell survives him in Florida.  Carter served in the US Air Force, retiring after over 26 years of service.  He enlisted on December 17, 1949 in Alamosa, Colorado and was faithfully and honorably discharged on November 1, 1976 as a Senior Master Sergeant from Eglin AFB in Florida.  Carter earned several military awards including the Good Conduct Medal, Air Defense Medal, Air Force Accommodation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and Meritorious Service Medal.  Corresponding with his military stations, Carter attended Administrative Technical School at Francis E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyoming; Electronics Countermeasures (ECM) Technical School at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi; Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL) Technical School at Lowry AFB, Denver, Colorado; and various military administrative and technical training courses.  On April 25, 1992 Carter’s education culminated at the University of West Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Systems Science/Business.  Carter taught at the University of West Florida in the Technology Department.  He enjoyed jogging and was an avid golfer.

Carter is survived by his wife, Nell Ross of Niceville, Florida; a niece, Sandra Kaye Gonzales of Bakersfield, California; and many extended family and friends.  In addition to his parents, Carter was preceded in death by his sister, Lena Jo Epesque.

The funeral service for Carter will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Chapman officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the Gallia County Funeral Detail at the funeral home. Burial will be in Victory Cemetery, Crown City, Ohio.  Carter’s nephews will serve as pallbearers.  Friends and family may call prior to the service Sunday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
