Joseph D. Carter of Cadmus, Ohio, passed away Sunday evening, March 23, 2008 following a long illness. He was born September 12, 1922 in Cadmus, son of the late Milton C. Carter and Mildred M. Patterson Carter. Joe was a 1940 graduate of Cadmus High School and attended Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 744th Railway Operating Batallion in France, Belgium and Germany. He was a life long self employed farmer. He and his wife owned and operated Carter's Grocery in Cadmus for 37 years. He was a substitute mail carrier for 30 years. Joe was a member of Sandfork Baptist Church and attended Salem Baptist Church until health problems prevented his attending. He was a lifetime member of Cultus Tribe No. 259 and Shawnee Tribe No. 18 Improved Order of Red Men Lodges, a member of VFW Post No. 4464, and an honorary lifetime member of AMVETS Post 141. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille Harrison Carter; daughter Lois Sheets of Gallipolis; son Keith A. Carter, Patriot; five grandchildren, Lynn Jo Anne Sheets of Bidwell, Gene Pauline Sheets of Ray, Kristy Jo Carter and fiance Robert Akers of Jasper, Tennessee, Jay A. Carter of Patriot, and Joy Mark Runyon of Westerville; four great grandchildren, Mercedes and Logan Sheets and Grace and Matthew Runyon. Also surviving are his brother, Charles Peggy Carter of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Mary Don Jenkins of Ironton and Doris Jay Evans of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Barbara Leonard of Pataskala; fifteen nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by one brother, Emmett Carter and son-in-law William Paige Sheets. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Willis Funeral Home with Rev. Phillip Taylor and Rev. Jerry Sickles officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, March 28, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. There will be full military honors by volunteers of area veterans lodges.
