Mae F. Thivener

Mae F. Thivener, of Gallipolis, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Holzer Senior Care where she had lived for the past 9 years as a result of Alzheimer's disease. She was born on November 18, 1913 at Greenbottom, West Virginia, to the late William R. and Ada Meadows. She moved to the Northup, Ohio area in her teens, where she met and married Ernest R. Thivener. Her husband, PFC Thivener, was killed in action during World War II in Germany. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by all seven of her siblings: Henry, Azel, Arch and Kenneth Meadows, and Marie Burton, Emma Thivener and Cora Strickland. Before being stricken with Alzheimers, Mae enjoyed all kinds of needlework, crossword puzzles, reading her Bible, and the Cincinnati Reds ballgames. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where, in past years, she had taught Sunday School. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from Holzer Clinic in 1979 after more than 25 years of service in the Ob-Gyn and Outpatient Surgery Departments. She is survived by her two daughters, Justine Joe Melton of Worthington and Marilene Otis Young of Gallipolis; three grandchildren, Michael Melton of Worthington, Lynn Saunders of Brownsburg, IN and Lt. Colonel Jeffrey Settle of Herford, Germany. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Jamie Saunders, and Meredith, Julia, William and Margaret Settle. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 25 at the Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Alvis Pollard, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home from 12 noon until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Centenary Cemetery.
