The Reverend Arnold Skaggs, 76, of Gallipolis, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Hospice House in Huntington, West Virginia. Born April 8, 1933, in Lowmansville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Brack and Maggie Hatfield Skaggs of Gallipolis. Arnold was a retired carpenter. In addition, he served as a pastor for several area churches over the past 40 years. In recent years, he served as caretaker for the Enterprise Baptist Youth Camp. He was a member of White Oak Baptist Church, where he served as pastor for several years. He was a veteran, serving his country in the Korean War. Married in 1953 to Ruth Rucker, he is survived by his wife and two children, Shirley David Tabor of Proctorville and Ed Janet Skaggs of Rock Hill, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Sarah Rowe of Proctorville, Amy Vann of Cincinnati, Elliott Skaggs of Fletcher, North Carolina and Farah Reynolds of Rock Hill, South Carolina; two great grandchildren, Ella Rowe and Chase Reynolds. He leaves behind three sisters, Ann Knotts of Gallipolis, Rosetta Bales of Columbus and Eunice Buck of Ft. Myers, Florida and two brothers, Gene and Marvin Skaggs, both of Gallipolis; many nieces and nephews. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Brenda Sue and three brothers, Edwin, Herman and Floyd. Services will be 2 p.m, Sunday, June 28, 2009 at White Oak Baptist Church with Rev. Alfred Holley and Rev. Carl Ward officiating. The body will lie in state 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Willis Funeral Home on Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. There will be full military honors by volunteers of area veteran’s lodges. Pallbearers will be Ed Mollohan, Mike Elkins, Rob Hilton, John Stevens, Danny Stevens and Jonathan Reynolds. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation in Arnold’s memory to the Enterprise Baptist Youth Camp, in care of Greg Mason, 3768 Carriage Run Drive, Hilliard, OH 43026.
