Sgt. Kevin R. Thornton, 46, of Laurel, MD. Died on Friday, April 25, 2008 as a result of an auto/motorcycle accident in Laurel MD. Kevin was riding north when a vehicle approaching from the south abruptly turned left into his lane of traffic. The resulting crash caused the death of Kevin who was born on December 8, 1961 in Gallipolis the son of Clifford and Cora Margaret Thornton who survive along with a brother Eric Sarah Thornton and a young nephew, Kaden who loved his uncle Kevin. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He was a graduate of Gallia Academy High School and attended The University of Rio Grande. Kevin's hobbies and interests were photography, reading , snow skiing, and motorcycling. He was a 18 plus year United States Army nurse veteran, Kevin had served tours in Belgium, Bosnia, Iraq, Kuwait and Korea as well as numerous state side assignments. He was currently serving at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. where a memorial service will be held at a later date. Kevin was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gallipolis, OH where calling hours will take place on Thursday, May 1, 2008 from 5 until 8 pm. Services will be at 11:00 am Friday, May 2, 2008 at the church under the direction of Pastor Alvis Pollard and Pastor Matt Townsend. Burial will follow in the Centenary Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be John Dixon, Terry Hopkins, Bobby Dean Gordon, Brad Harvey and Carroll Shoemaker. There will be full active duty military honors at the funeral service and the graveside services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Willis Funeral Home.
