Donald C. James,80, of Gallipolis, died at St. Mary's Medical Center on Tuesday, Aug.8, 2017. He was born May 9, l937 at Eureka, Ohio to the late, Frank and Norma Barcus James . In addition to his parents, he was, also preceded in death by a grandson, James A. Thompson; granddaughter, Jaimie Lynn Supple; brothers, Leo, Marlin and Carl James and brothers-in-law Charles Beach and George Violand; and sister-in-law Joann James. He was a member of the class 1955 Mercerville School. He was a member Christ United Methodist Church and served on many committees and Boards. He retired from the Gallipolis Developmental Center in August 1992 where he was Chief of Police. After retirement he worked at the Gallia County Senior Citizens in different areas but his favorite was visiting the elderly daily with meals on wheels. He served on the Gallia County Senior Citizens Board for several years. He was a member of the Morning Dawn Lodge and recently received his 50th year award. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Don always enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved camping, watching the boats, car shows, keeping everyone’s vehicles in running order. He loved riding the little ones on the "John Deere" lawn mower. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nancy Mitchell James; two daughters, Lesa (Bill) Lemley, Linda (Mike) Fraley; three grandchildren, Brad (Dreama) Clay, Chelsea (Jeff) Mayse and Rebecca Thompson; six great-grandchildren, Hunter Thompson, Lyla, Tucker, Abigail, Dalton, CJ Mayse, Caleb Supple; two sisters Charlotte Beach and Joyce Violand; sisters -in-law Nancy Myers and Patricia James; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Holzer ER staff, Dr. Berry and St. Mary's compassionate ICU team. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church Building Fund. Services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Jack Berry and Carroll Roberson officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 at the church prior to the service.
